When we lived in Manitoba one would often = see many different species of butterflies massing on the feces of wolves & = coyotes. I felt that when given the choice they would select such for their= mineral intake rather than bare ground (which was the case with my swallow= tails). I have rarely seen them on carrion. =20 I did not know about the males being more likely to do so. Never heard of your entomology prof. Is she still with us? =20 Angus=20 Date: Sun=2C 30 Jun 2013 07:03:11 -0300 Subject: Re: [NatureNS] Lep Photos Puddling Tiger Swallowtails From: nancypdowd@gmail.com To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Hi Angus=20 Your comment about the massing Tiger Swallowtails on the ground below one o= f your nice photos reminded me of something from my Entomology course at Da= l long ago (taught by Edith Angelopoulos- she did some insect segments on C= BC as well). Tiger Swallowtails are believed to mass or puddle on the ground to take in = minerals etc from the soil. They will do the same on dung or carrion too. A= ccording to Wikipedia males do this more often than females.
