Great photos, Paul! Everyone should notice the large, pink, obvious
mite on the back of the second beetle, the black and red one. Here
is what Stephen Marshall wrote in his big tome, "INSECTS: Their
Natural History and Diversity" (2006, Firefly Books):

"Nicrophorus adults ... invariably carry numerous small reddish mites
(Poechilochirus spp.). These acarine hitchhikers are regular
associates of burying beetles and, although they eat both fly and
beetle eggs, they purportedly 'pay for their ride' by eating fly eggs
that would otherwise hatch as maggots able to compete with burying
beetle larvae."

Also beware of common names like the ones used here by Paul. Both
Nicrophorus (burying beetles) and Necrophila (just called carrion
beetles) contain individual species named "americana", so that
"American Carrion Beetle" is perhaps confusing. Always check the
Latinized names; hence the importance of using them.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
