Thanks Donna, Carl and other for your advise.=0A=0AOnce this flowering seas=
on is finished, I think the plan will be to transplant a large soil patch (=
3 foot diameter) and move it to a spot about 2 feet from another lady slipp=
er. Spot is about 30 feet from its existing home so soil, shade, moisture a=
nd all other conditions should be as similar as possible. Unfortunately its=
current location is to easily walked and driven on and I would not want to=
encourage more in the same spot.=0A=0ARob=0A=C2=A0=0ATo free oneself of kn=
owledge is to die, and thus one lives. - Krishnamurti=0A=0A=0A_____________=

ct: RE: [NatureNS] ladyslipper transplant=0A =0A=0A=0AHello Rob:=C2=A0 A nu=
mber of years ago I transplanted both pink and yellow lady slippers.=C2=A0 =
The yellow lady slippers were from a clearcut.=C2=A0 (I knew they were ther=
e before the cutting, and I feared that they may not survive in the hot ope=
n clearcut, so I transplanted a small number of them.)=C2=A0 The pink lady =
slippers were rescued from an area that was about to be resurfaced for a ne=
w trail through Kouchibouguac National Park.=C2=A0 The Park decided that it=
was ecologically appropriate to do the rescues, and so a native garden was=
begun using these and other salvaged plants.=C2=A0 It was a wonderful proj=
ect. =0A=C2=A0=0ABoth lady slipper species survived nicely for the first co=
uple of seasons.=C2=A0 Then the pink ones slowly became shorter on the stoc=
k.=C2=A0 The late Dr Sam VanderKloet suggested that I add pine needles to t=
he soil around the pink lady slippers.=C2=A0 I had taken a large amount of =
soil around the original location of the plants, and I am certain that this=
helps.=C2=A0 However, the tricky symbiosis and other complex underground n=
etworks- no one fully understands why they don=E2=80=99t generally survive.=
=C2=A0 =C2=A0I haven=E2=80=99t been back to see whether these plants surviv=
ed, but I think not.=C2=A0 If your pink lady slippers are facing imminent d=
eath because of their current location, it=E2=80=99s an interesting experim=
ent to transplant them.=C2=A0 Don=E2=80=99t expect enduring success.=C2=A0 =
Perhaps planting near other lady slippers will be the key to success; maint=
aining the soil symbiosis.=C2=A0 Partial shade helps.=0A=C2=A0=0AOn a posit=
ive note, the yellow lady slippers bloomed year after year!=C2=A0 They were=
beautiful, and their presence in the garden proved very educational for ma=
ny folks.=C2=A0 I used to treat the soil for this species with a little lim=
e.=C2=A0 I am sure the orchid specialists can shed some more light on this =
topic.=0A=C2=A0=0ADonna=0A=C2=A0=0AFrom:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [mail=

ant=0A=C2=A0=0AOn my main walking path between the House and the lake, I ha=
ve a Lady Slipper in full bloom. It was unknown before this year because it=
has been so wet the path has not been mowed. To continue the survive abili=
ty of the plant I would like to transplant it near another lady slipper onc=
e it has finished blooming ( I many locations thankfully) . How deep and wh=
at spread are a ladyslippers roots so I can take the large area without dis=
turbing the plant.=0A=C2=A0=0ARob=0A=C2=A0=0A=C2=A0=0ATo free oneself of kn=
