Paul, your clump of Lady's-Slippers appearing on a large boulder were =
probably the Pink (Cyp. acaule.) It is unlikely that the other 3 species =
will be found in the province anywhere WEST of Windsor on the Lower =
Mainland i.e. the remnants of the African Plate as it is for the most =
part Granite (the continuation of North Mountain to Brier Island being =
Basalt is an exception.) That being said, All Granite is acidic. All =
Gypsum outcrops are from Windsor East to Cape North at the end of Cape =
Breton. The other 3 species require Calcium and there is very little =
Limestone in Nova Scotia. The large boulder may have seemed bare but =
probably contained duff and detritus from the forest. All Conifer =
needles and Red Oak leaves are acidic.
