All: Yesterday at HP I saw a female eider with eight very young ducklings in a curious crèche, consisting of a three males, one other adult female, and perhaps 8-10 first-summer (presumably non-breeding) females, which were distinguished by lack of conspicuous white edgings on their greater coverts. Presumably almost all other adult females were still sitting on nests. So, this wasn't a usual example of a bunch of hens with ducklings grouping for mutual protection of their young, but a female horning in on a party of swingers. Does anyone still use that term? Also interesting in a very small pond (path rut) at "back cove" was a Yellow-spotted Salamander (Ambystoma maculatum). Poor place for breeding. Cheers, Ian McLaren
