Hi all,

First of all, my apologies for posting a New Brunswick-based message, but I=
though this was worth sharing. Last week, Kevin Kelly located a large bric=
k building on McLeod Avenue in Fredericton, where he observed approximately=
200 Chimney Swifts entering a large brick chimney. Bird Studies Canada fie=
ld staff Lucas Berrigan and Gabrielle Beaulieu followed up this week to con=
duct counts for SwiftWatch and first counted 787 Chimney Swifts on May 22, =
and then 898 swifts last night (verified by video playback in slow-motion).
I spoke with the owner of the property today and he is happy to let people =
visit and observe the Chimney Swifts. In fact, he used to watch Chimney Swi=
fts at the now-abandoned Enterprise (formerly Incutech) chimney located on =
the UNB Fredericton campus nearby. This is great news for Chimney Swifts an=
d a good chance to see what would now be the largest concentration of Chimn=
ey Swifts in the Maritimes. The Fredericton roost chimney is located at 45.=
953138,-66.642601 or 710 McLeod Avenue. If anyone visits and takes photos o=
r videos, please consider posting them on our open Facebook page, www.faceb=
ook.com/Maritimes.Swifts<http://www.facebook.com/Maritimes.Swifts> or anoth=
er publicly available site.

Meanwhile, NS roosts are seeing good numbers as well: Claire Diggins counte=
d 536 last week at Middleton Regional High School (highest count in recent =
years) and Ken McKenna counted 558 at New Glasgow Junior High School (the b=
uilding previously occupied by Temperance Street Elementary School), while =
Jim Wolford and Jo Bishop had 115 in Wolfville last night, also the highest=
count for that roost since 2011.

We are still looking for people to visit the roost chimney located at Saint=
Mary's Parish Church in Mabou. The next scheduled SwiftWatch count is this=
Sunday, May 26. If you will be in the area, please contact me for details =
and directions.

Lastly, Mark Elderkin recently alerted me to the presence of a large, frees=
tanding chimney off HWY 101 at exit 7 (exit to Falmouth). It looks like it =
was connected to a greenhouse, which has long since fallen or been torn dow=
n. It has great potential as a roost chimney, so if anyone is in the area n=
ear dusk, it would be great to keep an eye on it and watch for Chimney Swif=
ts. Coordinates are 44.997802,-64.155458 and the chimney should be visible =
from the Petro Can on Station Lane.

Thanks!

Ally
