Dear All, May 24, 2013 Star-flower (Trientalis borealis) was in flower at North Alton yesterday. And one lonely Bluet (Houstonia caerulea) was in flower on the main road. Between 1982 and 2000 it was abundant along 100 paces or so of road but as the trees became larger (shade effect I expect) it has shrunk to stragglers. There is only one small patch of Mayflower (Epigaea repens) in these 70 acres and, perhaps not by coincidence, it is on the road edge of an area I thinned ~1982. Remnants of Common Lady's-Slipper capsules and scapes pollinated as early as 2010 were still recognizable. On the otherwise bare soil of a Dec 13, 2010 windfall root plate there was a thriving colony of Pogonatum pensilvanicum, evidenced mostly by the light green protonemal felt and scattered 2012 sporophytes. So it formed enough protonema in 2011 to fruit in 2012. Under a 10X lens one can see many tiny buds sprouting from the felt; the 2013 crop of male & female gametophytes I expect. Yours truly , Dave Webster, Kentville Pogonatum pensilvanicum (Hedw.) P.-Beauv.
