Dear All, Apr 26, 2013 Yesterday, in North Alton, I noticed a growth of some kind in the crown of a whippy Poplar that had bent over; fibrous at the base and within, cracked and firm on the outer rounded surface, attached in the crotch of a small branch and about 3 cm across. When detached from the tree it readily crumbled into several pieces. Near the base, in chinks between the several parts there were clusters of tiny spherical smooth shiny eggs (?).not quite 1 mm in diameter. The growth, whatever it is, looked old and weathered whereas the eggs looked relatively recent. Is this perhaps a growth of some kind, generated by one insect, that is subsequently used as an egg chamber by another insect ? Comments ? YT, DW, Kentville
