Good morning. It is a lovely day so far and the birds are holding forth royally. I have 14 Grackles stationed about in my trees, more if you count the ever hopefuls. There has been a beautiful Cardinal and yesterday after following a magic song awhile I found him singing away in the back of the property. I haven't heard one like that before. Wow. This morning there is a Fox Sparrow, been one here on and off (maybe travellers) since Saturday morning, a Brown headed Cowbird. It too is calling. There were three White Breasted Nuthatches at the feeders in the grapevine. Two were going one way and the third another so I wonder if there is a fourth somewhere. I know they all saw each other but aside from snapping their heads back and forth they just tisked and went about their business. Yesterday there were several American goldfinches and three Blue Jays. Robins have returned and are taking back their residences. I'm thinking a few haven't returned since we removed the hedge across the front of the property. There seems to be quite a bit of consternation about it. I was picking up debris around the yard and would like to speak their language to understand the comment..hmmm or maybe I would not. There has been a Coopers Hawk patrolling the feeders and this morning something larger. Hummingbird feeder has frozen a couple times but seems to be holding. The chickadees and finches have a taste every now and again. Even a sparrow has. Sparrows various here. There are definitely Song, White Throats and a Savannah, and after that I get lost. The Savannah may have been mauled by a cat, it is looking scruffy and is even more agitated and cautious than ever. The American trees and the chippings have moved on. Still every now and again we have a visit from a couple Common Redpolls and while I was watching them Sunday, in flew a female ..I'm saying a Rose Breasted Gros beak from the size. Too large to be a purple finch. There are a number of Woodpeckers; Hairy, Downy and Northern Flickers. There are Herons about. Steve said one at the Meadow Pond as you come west from town, and then I have seen them flying along the shore. Best regards Marg Millard, White Point, Queens
