I saw a Common Grackle for the first time this year on Monday, 1 April. I always see them first in my neighbourhood, usually while walking to work. This date was at least a week later than I usually see them. On Wednesday I saw my first American Robin for the year, also while walking to work. I had heard one last Saturday, so knew there was one around. Usually we have an influx of Robins in the winter in this area, but not this year. The resident Song Sparrows have been singing here for months. I hear at least a dozen individuals in my mile-long walk in the mornings. White-breasted Nuthatches are also calling now, Mourning Doves cooing, Dark-eyed Juncos trilling, and Downy Woodpeckers drumming. On some mornings I hear House Finches near Waegwoltic Avenue. Starlings are investigating nesting cavities. This morning, while I was putting sheets out on the line (another first for the year!) I a saw a furtive Blue Jay carrying sticks in its bill, skulking around in a tall spruce by the back fence. I detoured on Friday in order to check on a Daphne bush, but it was nowhere near to blooming. No Coltsfoot yet in the usual places either. Patricia L. Chalmers Halifax
