As I was heading out to feed the birds this afternoon I saw something on
the ground beside the back feeding cage where I put mealworms, suet,
etc. for our remaining 'special' birds. It was a small hawk, I think
our usual Sharp-shinned immature male, plucking a bird. The prey seemed
to have very bright feathers, and I quickly realized that it was our
Oriole. I ran to the back to try to rescue him, but I was too late.
The Sharpie had departed with its prey. I feel terrible that we have
lost our lovely Oriole which we have been feeding four times a day all
winter.

Before the last heavy rainstorm was the last time we saw 2 of our 3 Pine
Warblers. We still have the bright male.

The male Red-bellied Woodpecker has been making a nest hole in a dead
Ash tree, just behind our property line. We haven't seen the female in
several weeks, but perhaps she is still in the area.
