This morning between 0815 and 0830, I encountered a Dovekie (my best ID from my Peterson guide) sitting on the pavement in front of my car. It was between the driveway to 2277 Cow Bay Road (which is next to the entrance to Rainbow Haven Beach parking lot) and the next house towards the gun club. There was nobody else around, and I had no phone. It didn't seem injured - merely stranded, considering (as I understand) that they can't take off from land. With the aid of a white towel I had in my car, I tried to wrap it in the towel and carry it to the nearest expanse of water, which is actually on the west side of Cow Bay Road (the same side as Bissett Road). The bird would have no part of my rescue efforts, and vehemently reacted by flapping its wings and making threatening gestures with its sharp bill. Fearing that it might hurt me, or that it could become critically stressed, I left it. A few minutes later, I saw it sitting in a small snowbank at the side of the road near house #2277. Perhaps someone else will have better luck. Bob Lindsay Dartmouth
