Hi David,

Another way to put this question is why do so many bird species fly north for the summer? After all, most migratory species spend far more time in places like the southern USA and Central and South America than they do in Nova Scotia. The answer to both questions is that in spite of the hazards of doing this, the rewards outweigh the risks. At least they did when the behavior was evolving.
