Belated report from very snowy last Sunday -- Heather Drope was right
when she said its forecast looked to be a good day to stay indoors!
Despite the grim forecast for this Saturday, some of us will probably
attempt another Count of Raptors on Sunday. Cheers from Jim in
Wolfville.

Subject: Eagles/Raptors Count report etc.

On Sunday afternoon, Feb. 3/13, I got enough reports from field
parties to report on today's poor attempt at our annual COUNT OF
EAGLES/RAPTORS RESULTS, based on what was seen in 13 of 16 areas of
coverage. Viewing conditions (and road conditions) were barely
adequate at 10 a.m. in some areas, but deteriorated to very bad
during the hour of counting, so that A SECOND ATTEMPT WILL BE MADE
NEXT SUNDAY, FEB. 10, again at 10 to 11 a.m.

TOTAL BIRDS OF PREY SEEN ON THE COUNT were 204 BALD EAGLES (122
adults, 62 immatures, 20 undetermined ages), 15 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 1
PEREGRINE FALCON, and 2 or 3 BARRED OWLS.

Other critters noted were 3 pheasants, 100 Bohemian waxwings, 35
robins, 2 cardinals, 20 snow buntings, 5 purple finches, 200
redpolls, 5+ evening grosbeaks.

THANKS to everyone who tried this in very poor weather conditions.
P.S. The snowing and limited visibility plus wind resulted in
extremely few people doing the Eagle Watch at Sheffield Mills today,
in marked contrast to yesterday's huge crowds.

For next week's second attempt, we may be able to nostalgically meet
and report our results in Cyril's old kitchen at Gaspereau, if that
is OK with Zelda? (to be confirmed or otherwise).

Below I have pasted in my report on the last day of the Eagle Watch
for this year:

FEB. 3, 2013 - SUPER BOWL SUNDAY -- and last day of 22nd annual Eagle
Watch at Sheffield Mills, and first attempt at 32nd annual count of
eagles and other raptors in eastern King's County -- BUT the WEATHER
did not cooperate, with a snowfall that started in morning and got
heavier during the hour of our count -- temperatures -6 to -3 C., not
much wind but it seemed to swing around to be from the east at
Sheffield Mills at noon. I heard from Bob Cote that he heard there
were about 40 or more eagles at the viewing site at about 9:30 a.m.,
and some of the eagles were on the ground at the chicken carcasses
then (but sensibly not many people showed up for either the eagles or
the breakfast & displays -- roads were quite problematic, and
visibility was poor to worse -- later, a bit after noon, I counted 42
+ bald eagles at the viewing site, but only 2 were on the ground at
the chickens with a few ravens and great black-backed gulls.

Concerning our attempt at a count of eagles/raptors, only 6-7 out of
17 field parties got to the Hall to report their sightings, and there
was a GLITCH, too, for which I will take part of the responsibility:
two different parties covered the same area, since one group didn't
get my "FINAL? ROSTER" list of areas & observers. Anyway, conditions
were so poor that I'm sure we will have to repeat the count a week
from today on Sunday, Feb.10.

During our attempt at a count of eagles etc., Pat & I found a nice
flock of about 100 Bohemian waxwings, near Melanson and north of the
Gaspereau River.

At home in Wolfville, our multiflora rose bushes and hips were being
visited by 15+ robins.
----------------------
Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
