We were at the camp (East Dalhousie, Kings Co.) putting up duck boxes on 
Saturday and I was surprised to see these clumps of moss tufts all over 
the place. This moss is typically green and not tufty in summer and I 
have not noticed these soft burgundy tufts before.

Does anyone know if 
this is new growth or ? The ground was covered with a thick layer of ice and snow until our melt last week so the growth was either under the 
snow or sprouted very quickly.

I dubbed it a fruiting body (which is likely wrong) in the pictures below.
