Hi Paul & All, Jan 31, 2013
As the saying goes, well intended criticism is usually rejected, =
especially if from a friend, an associate, a relative or a stranger. =
This can lead to situations which, in hindsight, are quite amusing.

        Hi Lance
The time frame what I referred to was the 1950/60s.
I talked to them then and was told I didn't know what I was
talking about! It was over hunting.
Glad to see they came around to the truth - only took 50 years!
Like when coyotes came to Nova Scotia. Oh no, they wouldn't
        kill deer.=20
        Have a nice winter
        Paul

          Hi Paul,

          >You wouldn't find that from University or government folks.

You may find a small amount of comfort knowing that that =
isn=E2=80=99t always the case. In a 2012 environmental assessment report =
of the impact of the realignment of the Trans-Canada Highway in PEI the =
following can be found:

=E2=80=9CRoad salts that contain inorganic chloride salts are =
considered =E2=80=9Ctoxic=E2=80=9D as defined in Section 64 of the =
CEPA=E2=80=A6 Environment Canada determined that the development and =
refinement of Salt Management Plans is the best mitigation against =
potential environmental effects from road salt use.=E2=80=9D

Also, Environment Canada has issued a number of bulletins =
regarding road salt as well. This from an August 2000 bulletin:

=E2=80=9CBehavioural and toxicological impacts have been =
associated with exposure of mammalian and avian wildlife to road salts. =
Road salt increases the vulnerability of birds to car strike and may =
poison some birds directly. To relieve thirst, birds may ingest snow =
which could have negative energetic consequences; consumption of =
meltwater containing high concentrations of salt may increase salt =
ingestion rather than alleviating salt toxicosis. Road salt may also =
affect wildlife through its impact on habitat, with reduction in plant =
cover or community shifts that could affect wildlife dependent on these =
plants for food or shelter.=E2=80=9D

Of course whether decision makers heed these warnings is =
another question entirely.

          All the best,

          Lance

          Lance Laviolette
