But i'd have to comb thru my notes to be able to say whether i saw it actually eating many berries. Dean, nr Leesport _____ From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] On Behalf Of P.L. Chalmers Sent: Tuesday, January 29, 2013 10:20 PM To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Subject: Re: [NatureNS] robins, Wolfville, eating barberry? berries, etc. Jim, the robins must be really hungry. I have observed that barberry fruits are rarely eaten. Patricia L. Chalmers Halifax From: "James W. Wolford" <jimwolford@eastlink.ca > Date: January 28, 2013 2:55:34 PM AST To: Nature BNS < <mailto:nature@blomidonnaturalists.ca> nature@blomidonnaturalists.ca> Subject: [ValleyNature] robins, Wolfville, eating barberry? berries, etc. JAN. 28, 2013 - Jake MacDonald phoned to say he counted 22 robins eating red berries in a hedge, probably of barberry?, off lower Maple Ave. in Wolfville (just south of Kenny's Market property, I think). In our yard we again saw a couple of goldfinches and a single common redpoll; the goldfinches were on one of the sunflower seed feeders. Every day we have at least 2 cardinals and up to 3 flickers. Today there was also a hairy woodpecker, plus the juncos, white-throated sparrows, song sparrows, mourning doves, starlings, and another red squirrel (but no rats). Concerning the latter mammals, I'm happy that our neighbourhood red-tailed hawk often chooses to perch at the top of a pine the yard next-door to ours. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville. _______________________________________________ Nature mailing list Nature@blomidonnaturalists.ca http://blomidonnaturalists.ca/mailman/listinfo/nature_blomidonnaturalists.ca ------=_NextPart_000_0D90_01CDFE8A.C52DFDC0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META content=3D"text/html; charset=3Dus-ascii" = http-equiv=3DContent-Type> <META name=3DGENERATOR content=3D"MSHTML 9.00.8112.16457"></HEAD> <BODY> <DIV dir=3Dltr align=3Dleft><SPAN class=3D308112206-30012013><FONT = color=3D#0000ff=20 face=3DArial>Down here in southeast PA, not this winter but the previous = several,=20 a Mockingbird claimed a Barberry hedge that runs between one = of=20 our gardens and the road, and subsisted on the abundant=20 berries all winter, or so I assumed since near every = time=20 you'd go near it was on or around that hedge.
