Although I well remember Charles A. Sheldon's wri= tings on wilderness=2C mountain sheep=2C and Denali from my time as natural= ist at Kluane NP=2C I was unaware of his Nova Scotia connection. A plaque = or small exhibit at his cabin site sounds like a good idea - the NS governm= ent has not been very good about historic plaques in general - more at conv= enient pull-offs along highways would greatly add to the interest of any ar= ea for visitors and encourage longer stays - instead the government seems i= ntent on forcing people to travel at top speed from one point to another wi= th no incentive for stops along the way. =20 I don't know about a Sheldon festival - how many equally deserving pioneers= are we neglecting? - but I 'm in favour of anything that recognizes and he= lps preserve our knowledge of N. S. pioneer naturalists and conservationist= s. The late Merritt Gibson did a lot in that area=2C especially for Valley= naturalists=2C but there is so much more that could be done. Names from t= he South Shore that come to mind are E. Chesley Allen=2C R. R. McLeod=2C Ha= rrison F. Lewis=2C Evelyn Richardson=2C etc.=2C and I'm sure that you and P= eter Hope would know more of the "Pioneers of Keji"=2C including those who = pushed for its preservation as a National Park=2C that might be a good them= e for a festival or museum in that region. =20 =20 Speaking of Chesley Allen (father of NSBS pioneer C. R. K. Allen)=2C his bo= ok The Out-of-Doors was about the only nature book in rural schools around = the province when I was young=2C and so an inspiration to me and many other= s. He and Lewis also did the first published Christmas Bird Count in Nova = Scotia (Yarmouth in 1913)=2C and that reminds me that I must get back to fi= nishing compilation of mine! =20 Cheers=2C =20 Wayne P. Neily=20 Tremont=2C Kings Co.=2C Nova Scotia =20 "Two roads diverged in a wood=2C and I --=20 I took the one less traveled by=2C=20 And that has made all the difference." - Robert Frost=2C 1916 [The Road Not= Taken]=20 =20 Date: Sat=2C 26 Jan 2013 06:16:44 -0800 From: paulrita2001@yahoo.com Subject: [NatureNS] Charles Sheldon To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Hi All Below is an email that I sent a bunch of my friends and thought some of you might be interested. Mr Sheldon also was a birder and made observations about the birds in an Al= aska winter. Just last night I was reading the chapter where he walked 50 miles in early Feb to see for himself reports of wintering mallards=2C The temp was mild - he said - only -25F! Took him 5 days there and back. Here is the email The reason for me writing was about an idea I had for a promotion for South West Nova. A little shot in the arm for Tourism! Charles Sheldon was known as one of North Americia finest Naturalists. He was called the Father of Denali - the crown jewel of US parks. A full bio can be found at http://www.denali.national-park.com/info.htm#est= a along with many other sites in Google. Tom Walker said it best in an email to me. "Sheldon was intending to climb the mountain with Kartens but=2C as Karsten= s put it=2C "He went and ruined it all by getting married." Children follow= ed that union and although Sheldon continued to go afield=2C his family cam= e first. He was an Easterner and had close ties to the weather and environm= ent of the east. The place in Nova Scotia was near and dear to him and even= tually was the place where he died suddenly of an apparent heart attack in = 1928. He was a gentleman=2C had a wonderful family=2C and together the Shel= dons enjoyed Nova Scotia each summer as a family." His cabin was at Beaverskin Lake in Keji. However we have sort of overlooked him but I cann't think of a better recom= mendation for the area than that. Do you think something to mark his cabin would be appropriate? Perhaps a plaque along with a Charles Sheldon Festival? I know you are good at such things. Please feel free to direct any question to me. The article on the Mersey River in Canadian Outdoors will soon be appearing= .=20 Hope you enjoy it Paul = --_07f7f9b9-cb8d-4c42-b49d-6ae650bb87e3_ Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <html> <head> <style><!-- .hmmessage P { margin:0px=3B padding:0px } body.hmmessage { font-size: 10pt=3B font-family:Tahoma } --></style></head> <body class=3D'hmmessage'><div dir=3D'ltr'> Hello Paul=2C<BR>  =3B<BR> Thanks for sharing this. =3B Although I well remember Charles A.
