Richard Stern reported this bird as we concluded our observation today at Crescent Beach, Lunenburg Co. At first it was by itself and then it flew once and was joined by 2 Dunlin. The size difference was obvious. As is typical there, these birds were on the N side = the Dublin Bay side of the causeway. At high tide there are never any shorebirds there, and tides are particularly high right now. Low tide today was roughly 2:45 PM and we were watching this bird about 12:10-12:45 PM. This was likely close to optimal timing as the mud flats were just nicely being exposed next to the road, without huge areas exposed going off into the distance. So the optimal time tomorrow would likely be 1-2 PM. I have posted 3 photos to show the bird, the bill, and the rear view, respectively. I know Richard will post photos too. Looking at Blake's winter birds site, and Ian's new book, this species has only been seen in NS in Dec-Feb once or twice before, and never in January. http://tinyurl.com/czlzema Rick Whitman
