This Week's Sky at a Glance

Some night sky sights for January 11 =E2=80=93 19

In this coldest time of the year, the dim Little Dipper hangs straight =
down from Polaris after dusk, as if on the cold barn wall of the sky.=20

On Friday January 18, the moon goes into its First Quarter Phase meaning =
we it will rise at noon and set at midnight.

On Saturday, January 12, the sun rose at 8:00 a.m. and sets at 5:03 p.m. =
On Saturday, January 19, the sun will rise at 7:56 a.m. and set at 5:12 =
p.m.

This Week's Planet Roundup=20

Mercury is hidden in conjunction with the Sun.=20

Venus (magnitude =E2=80=933.9) is getting lower in the dawn each =
morning. Look for it above the southeast horizon about 30 minutes before =
sunrise.=20

Mars (magnitude +1.2) still glimmers very low in the west-southwest in =
the fading glow of sunset.=20

Jupiter (magnitude =E2=80=932.7) is the first =E2=80=98star=E2=80=99 to =
appear in the eastern sky after sundown. It dominates the high southeast =
after dusk, with orange Aldebaran below it. Jupiter is highest in the =
south around 9 p.m. =20

Saturn (magnitude +0.6) rises in the east-southeast around 2 a.m. By the =
beginning of dawn it's fairly high in the southeast. That's the best =
time to get your telescope on it. Saturn's rings are tilted 19=C2=B0 to =
our line of sight, the widest open they've been for seven years.=20
