Hi all
I have most of the results from the Pictou Hbr. CBC run on Jan 1. The =
forecast for the day was windy and cold and although in some places and =
at times it was and flurries reduced visibility at times, the day =
actually turned out to be much better than predicted and the overcast =
day combined with 8-10 cm of snow cover made for pretty decent birding. =
I have a total of 75 species seen at this time. New to the count was a =
Yellow-breasted Chat seen by Steve and Amber Vines near the Pictou =
Armories and a Semi-palmated Plover by Randy Lauff and Krista DeCoste =
at Green's Pt. There were 3 Chipping Sparrows along the Three Brooks =
Rd., 1 Swamp Sparrow in a small marsh near the New Glasgow sewer, a pair =
of Eurasian Wigeon at Green's Pt., 3 Pintail, 30 Am. Wigeon, 10 Gadwall, =
and 5 Green-winged Teal all in the Green's Pt. -NSPC Trenton outflow =
and 2 Hoary Redpoll in Lock Broom area. Most numerous bird was =
Red-breasted Merganser with 3843. Also in good numbers were Black Duck- =
1573, Canada Geese, 1190, Greater Scaup- 1143 (actually a low number for =
this species)Common Merganser-665 and Hooded Merganser 125. There were =
21 species of waterfowl.=20
Most common finch of 7 species seen was Common Redpoll-677, but also =
Evening Grosbeak-357. No Crossbills were noted. There was also a count =
week Pine Warbler in west side New Glasgow.=20
Missing from the list for several years now was Boreal Chickadee and a =
second Chat seen Dec. 28 at Abercrombie Loop was not seen since that =
date. Rick Ferguson encountered a Great Horned Owl on a crow carcass in =
daylight and our group of 4 were entertained for a while by a Ruffed =
Grouse eating barberry only a couple meters from our car window.=20

cheers
Ken
