I = came over and after a brief chase I caught a Dovekie. It was in perfect = condition. The problem with many diving birds is that they require a = water runway to take off. When on land these birds are helpless because = their feet are too far back on their bodies and they can't stand up and = run. They more or less skid along their chests. My neighbour held the = bird as we drove to Ketch Harbour where we released it in calm water off = a dock. As I surmised the Dovekie was in perfect condition and very = relieved to be floating again. It buzzed its little wings like a = butterfly, either thanking us I hope, or ridding itself of human = influence. My neighbour was delighted! At lowish tide, plus or minus two hours, I've had Glaucous Gulls(2) and = Purple Sandpipers(2-3)each time I have visited Duncan Reef in the last = week. I also spotted a single(unusual) Gray Jay, more properly known as = Canada Jay alongside Chebucto Head Road on our evening walk yesterday. = There has been a grass roots movement to declare the Gray Jay our = national bird and also to change the name back to Canada Jay. I'm on = board!
