*This Week's Sky at a Glance*

*Night sky sights for December 28 =96 January 5***

*Sirius*, the Dog Star, sparkles low in the east-southeast in early evening
and Jupiter forms a straight line with Aldebaran .

On Monday, December 31 after the New Year is brought in, the bright Moon
will be shining in the southeast, with *Regulus *to its left. Due south is
Sirius at its greatest height, with *Orion *to its upper right and the *
Jupiter-Aldebaran* arrangement farther on.

By about 9 p.m., the *Big Dipper* is swinging upward in the
north-northeast. It drags the end of its handle along the horizon as its
bowl rises upward.

In this coldest time of the year, the dim *Little Dipper* hangs straight
down from *Polaris *in mid-evening as if from a nail on the cold north wall
of the sky.

On Friday, January 4, the* latest sunrise *of the year happens this
morning.

With dawn coming its latest at this time of year, take a look outside for
the waning *Moon *passing *Spica *and *Saturn*.

On Friday, January 4, the *Moon *will go into its Last Quarter Phase
meaning it will rise at midnight and set at noon.

On Saturday, December 29, the *Sun *will rise at 8:02 a.m. and set at 4:49
p.m. On Saturday, January 5, the sun will rise at 8:02 a.m. and set at 4:55
p.m.

*This Week's Planet Roundup*

*
*

*Mercury* (magnitude =960.6) is disappearing low in bright dawn, well to th=
e
lower left of Venus low in the southeast. They're 11=B0 to 13=B0 apart. Loo=
k
for it early in the week with binoculars.

*Venus* (magnitude =963.9) is still the bright =91Morning Star=92 but it's
moving lower in the dawn every week. Look southeast.

*Mars* (magnitude +1.2) still remains low in the southwest in evening
twilight.

*Jupiter* (magnitude =962.8) is the first to come out in the eastern sky
after sundown. It climbs to dominate the high southeastern sky later the
evening, with orange Aldebaran 5=B0 below it. Jupiter passes highest in the
south around 10 p.m. Looking at Jupiter with a birding scope at this
timewill show four of its moon, three to the left and one to the
right.

*Saturn* (magnitude +0.7) rises in the east-southeast around 3 a.m. By the
beginning of dawn it's fairly high in the southeast. That's the best time
to get your birding scope on it. Saturn's rings are tilted 19=B0 to our lin=
e
of sight, the widest open they've been in seven years.

Yosemite National Park* <http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap121225.html>

*Happy New Year to all. Wishing you clear night skies in 2013 (at least on
those special evenings).*
