All: Got to Hartlen Pt. about 14:00, just as the showers were giving way to clearing skies and weak westerly airflow. The surf on the harbourside beach was impressive, and much decayed kelp had been flung ashore. There was nary a sparrow - may have gone inland for cover during the prior blow. As they will, gulls were taking advantage of the surf 9(and being frequently flushed by it) and were plucking crustaceans (amphipods?) out of the of the roil. Among them were about a dozen Bonaparte's, 10 Black-headed, 35 Iceland (Kumlien's) and just a few Ring-billed and Herring. The closed golf course had a grazing flock of 96 Canada Geese, all relatively large and pale-breasted, but not the ones with whitish extending over the mantle behind the neck that may characterise those breeding on Newfoundland. We have more to learn. Best, Ian Ian McLaren
