This = is quite late for this species and definitely rare for this time of = year. It was foraging on the ground north of our house when we first saw = it but today it was in the multiflora rose bramble by our back yard = pond. We have planted elderberry, red currant, high bush cranberry and = high bush blueberry on our property. All of these plantings are stripped = of their goodies by late summer. Only the multiflora rose and mountain = ash remain to feed late migrants and overwintering birds. Over twelve years ago I put up a bird box outside our kitchen window, = perhaps ten metres distant. It has never serviced a bird but this may be = changing. The Red-bellied Woodpecker was chiseling the portal this = afternoon and was able to get its head inside. This bird box is a little = below eye level so if it decides to overwinter in this box the = photographic opportunities would be astounding. Dare I think breeding?
