Hi Peter=0AFirst of all I've been to Brier Island twice - but never examine=
d the roses carefully.=0Aso what I write is in general terms only.=0ABut th=
e Common Wild Rose is one of the Rosa virginiana family.=0AThere are a numb=
er of different species with small differences.=0AAll cross freely so there=
is lots of intermediates. Good luck=0Aputting them in pigeon holes. Some m=
embers of the family are native=0Amuch farther north than Nova Scotia. A ha=
rdy plant.=0AThey are very useful on salt marshes and beaches and hold the =
soil very well.=0ASpread like wildfire.=0AThey produce a lot of seed in hip=
s somewhat larger than multifloria=A0=0Abut are used as food only in extrem=
e cases. Although the flesh of the hips is=0Anutritious the seeds have hook=
s on them that make passing the unused portion=0Aof the meal a scratchy aff=
air. In fact the Natives had a name for them=0Athat probably wouldn't go by=
the censor - LOL=0ARogusa roses have been cultivated and some have been us=
ed to bind=A0=0Abanks and so on as John suggested. Not so liable to sucker =
as the others.=0AAn interesting plant - lots of history.=0AEnjoy the first =

was wondering if the roses which were installed on Dunbrack St. in Halifax=
(and later removed, I believe) were multiflora?=0A=0AAnd how about the eno=
rmous ones which you see on the coast, say between the North Light and Seal=
Cove on Brier Island, and on the barrachois beach at Pond Cove on Brier?=
