--Alt-Boundary-18542.1631046 Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-description: Mail message body This morning in a flock of ca. 525 Canada Geese near College Road, Windsor, I found a lone "Richardson's" Cackling Goose (noticeably smaller than the Canadas; head with steep forehead and squarish shape; short stubby bill; short, stout neck; paleish breast). Most of the Canadas were of the expected eastern variety, large with pale breasts, but I estimated that about 25 (ca. 5%) were dark-breasted and fitted Branta canadensis interior from NE Canada or Greenland. This proportion should increase during the next few weeks. At one time all the geese were suddenly on high alert, and a few flew away. Some predator had to be in the vicinity. One immediately thinks of an eagle, but it turned out to be a big, healthy-looking coyote trotting across the field just S of the goose flock. It paused, sat down, examined the flock, and then, it appeared, decided this was too big a project to take on, and trotted away westward. Eric L.
