OCT. 27, 2012 - Beautiful Sunny day, and this afternoon Pat & I drove
around in the Canning area to catch the Fall colours. Near Blueberry
Acres, where the highbush blueberry bushes are still nicely red-
leaved, we stopped at Saxon Street Pond to view the waterfowl. While
we looked at about 100 ducks (about 65 green-winged teals, plus black
ducks and mallards and a single f/imm pintail, an immature bald eagle
flushed all the ducks by swooping at them a few times.

When the eagle disappeared, the ducks quickly reassembled on the
water, and a few minutes later probably the same eagle repeated the
swooping and flushing, and then left empty-taloned.

Every year, during and after the waterfowl hunting season, bald
eagles and probably other raptors (like great horned owls) have a
field day by locating, catching, and scavenging on injured and dead
ducks and geese that are not retrieved by hunters. I'm sure our
eagle today was "testing" those ducks and looking for cripples among
those swimming.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
