Although it was windy, rain did not come till we were = leaving at 4 so we had a pretty good day. Land birds were thin in = numbers, but waterfowl are starting to build-up particularly Surf = Scoter, Canada Geese and Red-breasted Mergansers. Sparrow numbers are = down considerably from last visit. Myrtles were the only warblers = observed. Dunlin numbers were pretty good with 67, and a late Spotted = Sandpiper was seen along the main causeway beach. There were 8 shorebird = species including a Wilson's Snipe flushed near the pond at Harmony = Hill.=20 Despite a good number of Horned Grebes and increasing numbers of = Red-throated Loons, no Red-necked grebes were observed.=20 A female Indigo Bunting was observed and Charlie photographed along the = side of Docker Rd.=20 While searching for Nelson's Sparrows along the south edge of the big = saltmarsh, we almost walked up to Peregrine Falcon which took of with = what looked to be claws full of eelgrass. When we walked up to the = nearby take-off spot, we discovered a pile of Blue Jay feathers and a = Blue Jay bill! The remains must have been in the eelgrass in the = falcon's claws.=20 Only butterfly observed was a Red Admiral. My e-Bird submission is below = for the complete listing.=20 cheers Ken Big Island, Pictou, CA-NS 12-Oct-2012 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Protocol: Traveling 15.0 mile(s) Comments: with Charlie Kendell 59 species Canada Goose 590 American Black Duck 84 Mallard 1 Green-winged Teal 34 Common Eider 1 Surf Scoter 241 White-winged Scoter 4 Black Scoter 5 Common Merganser 18 Red-breasted Merganser 80 Ring-necked Pheasant 1 Ruffed Grouse 1 Red-throated Loon 6 Common Loon 4 Horned Grebe 20 Northern Gannet 32 Double-crested Cormorant 22 Great Cormorant 1 Great Blue Heron 5 Northern Harrier 1 Bald Eagle 3 Black-bellied Plover 21 Semipalmated Plover 17 Spotted Sandpiper 1 Greater Yellowlegs 3 Semipalmated Sandpiper 1 White-rumped Sandpiper 1 Dunlin 67 Wilson's Snipe 1 Bonaparte's Gull 66 Ring-billed Gull 53 Herring Gull 16 Great Black-backed Gull 4 Common Tern 1 Rock Pigeon 8 Mourning Dove 1 Belted Kingfisher 2 Northern Flicker 2 Peregrine Falcon 1 with a freshly killed Blue Jay Blue Jay 6 American Crow 90 Common Raven 2 Horned Lark 12 Black-capped Chickadee 24 Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 Golden-crowned Kinglet 8 American Robin 12 European Starling 48 American Pipit 3 Yellow-rumped Warbler 12 Savannah Sparrow 12 Nelson's Sparrow 3 Song Sparrow 15 Swamp Sparrow 1 White-throated Sparrow 4 Dark-eyed Junco 8 Indigo Bunting 1 female-type plumage photographed by Charlie = Kendell along Docker Rd. and seen well by both of us.
