ve protected.=0AI remember telling someone just when we started "Better to =
light=0Aa candle than complain about the darkness" I never thought we could=
=0Aaccomplish what we did.=0AOther communities would do well to copy the pl=
an.=0AEnjoy the fall=0APaul=0A=0A=C2=A0=0A=0A=0A=0A________________________=

wonderful news. However I wanted to wait to write =0Ato you until I was su=
re things were truly settled.=0A=C2=A0=0ANeedless =0Ato say as a long time =
visitor to Troop`s Island I am totally delighted that many =0Agenerations o=
f children and families will be able to use the island in =0Aperpetuity.=0A=
=C2=A0=0ASpecial =0AThanks go to Ella McQuinn ,past Chair of St.Margarets S=
tewardship Association =0Afor her skillful and patient charting of the wate=
rs to get us to the final =0Adestination of purchasing the island .=0A=C2=

cted Forever =0AThe tally is in and we=E2=80=99re =0Athrilled to confirm th=
at 28 acres of Troop Island will be purchased Friday and =0Aheld in trust f=
orever. We have received $818,000 of the $820,000 goal as of =0AThursday ni=
ght and know that more pledges and cheques will arrive in the morning =0Aan=
d throughout the next couple of days. Any funds over the goal will be added=
to =0Athe endowment for the stewardship of the island. =0AWith little over=
a month to pull =0Athe community campaign and remaining funds together sin=
ce securing a last-minute =0Aoption to buy the island, the stakes were high=
and the goal was ambitious to say =0Athe least. Yet the support has been o=
verwhelming, which speaks to the deep =0Adesire Nova Scotians have for prot=
ecting our coastline and special natural =0Aplaces. Troop Island in particu=
lar has touched people not only for its beautiful =0Abeaches and shoreline =
vistas, but also for the rare and varied natural features. =0AThe old growt=
h forest, intertidal marsh lands, bird life and freshwater pond =0Arepresen=
ts a variety of ecosystems that are becoming more precious to people of =0A=
every age. We=E2=80=99ve heard from people young and old, locals and people=
who=E2=80=99ve never =0Aeven seen the island, all passionate about protect=
ing special places like Troop =0AIsland. Our youngest =E2=80=9CTroopers,=E2=
=80=9D Nathaniel and Phoebe McLaren, donated all the =0Amoney in their pock=
ets to =E2=80=9Chelp Theodore Tugboat save the island!=E2=80=9D Local =0Abu=
sinesses, community groups and families stepped up, and people reached out =
to =0Afriends and family and to contacts through social media, urging every=
one to be a =0Apart of this legacy too. It has been incredible seeing how f=
ar and how fast word =0Ahas spread and support has come pouring in. We even=
heard from decedents of the =0Aoriginal Troupe family for whom the island =
was named, and they are thrilled that =0Ait will be protected for future ge=
nerations. =0AThe St. Margaret=E2=80=99s Bay =0AStewardship Association and=
the Nova Scotia Nature Trust would like to thank =0Aeveryone for their ver=
y generous contributions of time and money which have =0Ahelped to preserve=
a unique piece of Nova Scotia=E2=80=99s coastal legacy. We hope this =0Apa=
ssion and energy will continue as we work together with the local community=
to =0Asteward this and other protected islands in the bay. We hope too, th=
at the =0Aincredible momentum that built around this campaign will continue=
to build =0Atowards protecting other coastal lands and islands in the bay =
and across the =0Aprovince. =0AFor those still wishing to be a =0Apart of t=
he Troop Island campaign, donations continue to be welcome. Additional =0Ad=
onations will help to build a stewardship endowment fund for Troop Island, =
=0Aproviding critical funds to steward and protect the island, in perpetuit=
y.
