SEPT. 22, 2012 - I checked the Wolfville Clock Park to see if any of
the planted witch-hazels there (several varieties) were in bloom.
None were, but there were other interesting flowers, including
something planted that was totally unfamiliar to me: 6-parted flowers
with whitish petals and sepals with dark spots all over them -- a
short shrub, perhaps 45 cm. tall, with entire green monocot leaves
(parallel veins).

AND there were 2-3 kinds of fungi among the planted shrubs,
particularly one large mushroom in clumps with bulbous stipe-bases
and purplish gills -- Nancy Nickerson at first glance at two that I
collected said probably Psathyrella species or perhaps an Agaricus?
I was pleased with her guess of Psathyrella, since that was my guess,
too, probably based on her past identifications in the field over
past decades. Anyway, Nancy will get back to us on this identification.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
