Paper Wasps are just one species (Polistes) that make small naked nests in our porch light settings or inside sheds etc. The others are mostly yellow-jackets plus the bald-faced hornet, all of which build large nests in various settings. Family Vespidae, Subfamily Vespinae, Genera Vespula and Dolichovespula (latter is bald-faced hornet, which is a yellow-jacket with white markings). Only a couple of species like the bald-faced hornet build the large exposed hanging paper nests. Other species nest underground or inside rotten woodwork of buildings or other situations. Chris, have I got this right? The vast majority of Nova Scotian wasps in order Hymenoptera are all solitary, non-colonial wasps with incredible diversity of species and habits, and many or most of them are predators on specific prey items and frequently called parasites or parasitoids. Just leaf through the Hymenoptera section of a good entomology text sometime to appreciate these examples of biodiversity around us. Rick Whitman, before he retired from the Agric. Research Stn. in Kentville, studied some very, very small wasps that were egg- parasites of pests of agricultural fruits. He raised the wasps and used them for integrated pest control. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
