Dear All, Sept 11, 2012
Over the years I have regularly seen a red Dragon Fly around the yard in
Kentville; usually late Aug or later and usually sunning on wood or a white
wall. I don't recall having seen them elsewhere.

It is about 6 cm long and, except for a short dull terminal section, the
dorsal surface of the abdomen is bright red.

Until about 2000 a nearby surface drain, that was usually wet or moist
much of the year, was open. Since then it has been covered but has two vents
from which an insect could emerge and the old section of pipe (ca 1942) must
have a generous coating of sludge.

I am wondering if the larval stage of this red Dragon Fly can live in
such habitats. If not then why does it hang around the yard ? Could an open
compost pile be an attraction ?

Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville
