B= ut as "birders", I think we can enjoy seeing the=0Abird in its habitat, see= ing the bird in perspective, seeing the bird=0Aacting normally and seeing t= he bird as we would with the naked eye.=0AThe photo still needs to be in fo= cus and interesting. The decision to=0Ainclude the photo with sheep was ver= y easy for me.=0A=0AI believe Richard Crossley in his "The Crossley ID Guid= e Eastern=0ABirds" does an excellent job of marrying those two objectives i= n a=0Asingle image. You always have the close up but there are numerous=0Ao= ther birds at various distances off into the background. These images=0Awer= e created, of course, using several to many photos. I use Crossley=0Aas muc= h for forward-looking bird ID study as for ID of birds seen. You=0Asee them= in his images as you will see them in the field.=0A=0AI don't disagree wit= h anyone who prefers painted images for a field=0Aguide, Sibley being the c= urrent leader. You can show critical details=0Ain paintings that are close = to impossible to capture in a photo. To=0Asome extent I suspect the truly s= killed painters eliminate fine detail=0Ato highlight what really is needed = for ID. But no general field guide=0Awill illustrate the range in distance,= angle and activity that=0ACrossley captures. Some of the specialist guides= come close.=0A=0ARick Whitman=0A=0AOn Sun, Sep 2, 2012 at 11:10 AM, P.L.
