I'm surprised that they take so long to hatch. Do they dig in the wet soil and hibernate for the winter? Heather - a flower person. Hello All, According to what I have read, given the right conditions, Snapping Turtle eggs will hatch anywhere from 70 to 90 days following their laying. The Snapping Turtle at Red Bridge Pond, here in Dartmouth, laid her eggs on June 10. Seventy days would have been August 19. Went down today to check the sight and despite some trenches dug (muskrat, maybe, it was suggested) down below the sight, everything looks exactly the same. When hatchlings emerge, will the evidence be obvious? Just curious. Know it will be highly unlikely that anyone would be able to see it happen (would probably have to camp out 24/7 to get to see that happen :o) but does it happen gradually or is it a scramble digging out by all at the same time, and a mad dash to the water? (like sea turtles?) Thanks in advance for any info.
