They initially thought it was a Right Whale, but something struck them =
as odd about the way it looked. The Captian said it looked like a bald =
right whale, with none of the usual signs of callosities. There were no =
photos of the throat or the flukes. Word is now out asking everyone on =
the water to keep an eye out for this whale (or perhaps whales), to see =
if we can get some more photos. Since distributing the photos several =
people have confirmed it as a bowhead from the unique bulge. We also =
received this from Moe Brown:

Hi Andy and Chris. I hope the summer is treating you well, the whales =
have certainly been interesting.
Laurie forwarded your natureNS posting. We also photographed this =
bowhead last Sunday, very cool that it is sticking around, and one of =
our friends also saw it yesterday in the Bay, I don't have the location =
yet. Perhaps we can compare photos and see it if is the same one.
Cheers, Moe

  Hi Andy,

What makes you think that this is not a Right Whale? In the third =
photo the blowholes seem prominent, but I wouldn't think necessarily =
more so than a Right Whale. Was she able to get any photographs of the =
throat or of the flukes?

  Cheers!

  Chris

I will put the photos Chris took up on the Nature NS facebook page. As =
I mentioned in my earlier post, the whale was not co-operating, and the =

was not going to chase it...that's a violation of their rules.

      Hi Andy,

Someone will doubtless correct me, but I'm not aware of any =
records from Nova Scotia, and certainly not from the Bay of Fundy. There =
was a skull excavated Ste Anne des Monts in the Gaspe Peninsula in 1949, =
but I'm not aware of any records further south than this. A record from =
the Bay of Fundy would be an extraordinary find. Have you mounted any of =
the photographs anywhere to the web?

      Cheers,

      Chris
