We are so fortunate to have such knowledgeable people like Bev Wigney
as contributors on our list!

Regarding Paul's question, the most common (and very common) spider
now found all around houses in our area (Valley) are what I call
"cross spiders", Araneus diadematus, which have the banded legs that
Paul mentioned and cross-shaped white markings on the brownish dorsal
part of the abdomen. They are also confusingly called "garden
spiders" and are part of the huge family called orb-web weavers,
making the familiar orb web of circular and radial strands. At this
time of year the spiders are big and noticeable and will be laying
eggs soon in silk-lined egg-sacs.

For a great starter on spider biology and identifications, I
recommend the Golden Guide to Spiders And Their Kin -- very
affordable and available in bookstores (& easy to order) and full of
colour illustrations.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
