I think they head back toward the American south. According to some sources
they only exist year round in North America in the American southwest
meaning our butterflies probably come from the West Indies or Mexico. This
may change with warmer winters, in fact this winter they may have survived
well into the southern US.
Apparently in Europe/Africa they survive year round only in the Saharan
subregion.
