Thank you very much for getting an id on this. It was along the trail on t=
he way into the park at Keji Seaside Adjunct out along one of the barren sh=
rub sections for those that might want to keep a record of where this wasp =
can possibly be found in Nova Scotia or if anyone keeps a record for this s=
ort of sighting. I can give a general GPS if anyone is interested as I hap=
pened to photograph a painted lady near where we saw it. NAD83 20T 0352258=

Another possibility is one of the horntails. These are wasps (Hymenoptera)=
whose larvae feed on the inner bark. Females have a large ovipositor=2C t=
he origin of the name horntail.

_Urocerus cressoni_ is black with variable reddish markings.

This was not the one. The one we saw was a lot thinner and the orange abdo=
men was very long in comparison to the rest of the body. The wings were al=
so black. I've seen a lot of strange looking insects and I dearly wish tha=
t I could have gotten a picture of this one as it is the only time that I'v=
e ever seen anything like it in my travels. =20

two weeks. Now I know what it was. Thanks=2C David.

I tried to get a picture of a wasp/beetle that I saw at Keji Seaside Adjunc=
t Yesterday. It took off and went deep into some foilage before I could sn=
ap the shutter. I've not seen this particular beast before. It was very l=
arge=2C about 1 in or close to it. All black=2C but very thin with a brigh=
t orange abdomen. In some ways it reminded me of a fake wasp=2C but in oth=
er respects of a large bettle of some sort. Any ideas from those with an i=
nsect background?
