I believe that Rhexia virginica is one of = the endangered Atlantic Coastal Plain Flora so I'm sure that the ACPF = recovery team would appreciate knowing the whereabouts of this location. = Do you know if the Island is privately-owned or whether it is crown = land? We have just returned from a Wild Flora trip to the SW parts of the = Province and saw many of the ACPF species - I just wish I was a more = accomplished photographer so that I could record more of what we saw! Thanks for your very interesting report!! Cheers, Bob McDonald ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Paul MacDonald=20 To: Nature NS=20 Sent: Monday, August 20, 2012 8:53 AM Subject: [NatureNS] Meadow-beauty Hi All Yesterday we took a paddle on a small lake. It hardly=20 qualifies as a lake just a wide part of the river! The water is low and lots of Islands, points and near islands. A good time to discover deep water - knowledge that will be useful during fishing time. One small island - the size of a medium sized house was covered with Meadow-beauty flowers - Virginia probably Rhexia virginica. The Island is just high enough the water only goes over it when its high. As it = sort of is in the run between two lakes the ice cakes keep the vegetation = under control and obviously provides excellent habitat for Meadow- beauty.=20 Very lovely - I cann't remember any other spot so cover with them. An old pine tree nearby had recently been struck by lightning. Anyone wishing to know why not to stand under a big tree in a T&L storm need look no further. It had taken a 2X10 out of the side - but it hadn't = planed it - just threw it against a maple tree a few meters away. Meadow-beauty were on Lunch Island also. Not as many but I've seen them there before. They grow there just at the top of the grass = in the gravel at the base of the bank. We also saw some Bladderwort - some Horned on the shore and a few Swollen out in about 30 cms of water. There was some Purple = Bladderwort also in the water. A perfect day for a paddle. Get out and enjoy the flowers! Paul No virus found in this message.
