AUG. 17, 2012 (cont.) - I returned to Evangeline Beach parking lot at
3:05 p.m., 1 hr. 40 min. after high tide. About 2500 peeps were
flying off the ebbing beach and then re-landing. The beach was still
pretty narrow, so that this is not the time for walking through the
foraging or roosting habitat of the birds.

Two pairs of human recreators were obliviously walking through the
foraging habitat of the peeps and close to some of the birds, but by
3:20 p.m. the beach was fairly wide and any human disturbance much
reduced.

At 3:25 p.m. I walked east from the public stairs for about 20
minutes. During most of that time there were many smallish flocks,
up to 200 peeps, that were working their way westward along the
beach, by flying, relanding, and foraging a bit, and then flying
again (my impression, impossible to follow individual birds).

Today the peeps consisted of about 90% semipalmated sandpipers, and
10% semipalmated plovers. (Yesterday or the day before, one of the
big flocks near the viewing platform was, contrastingly, about 2/3
semipalmated plovers and 1/3 semipalmated sandpipers)(impressions
with 7X binoculars).)

At about 3:30 p.m. several thousands (5000?) more peeps appeared in
the air from the east and flew toward the west in a gradual, halting
way, by landing and foraging a bit and re-flying, but nearly always
toward the west.

On this beach walk, I saw great black-backed gulls, herring gulls, a
single ring-billed gull, 2 double-crested cormorants in the water
close to shore (one noticeably larger than the other, made me wonder
if a parent teaching a fledgling to fish??), and crows.

NO SQUID EGGS (SEA-MOPS) seen.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
