--Apple-Mail-4--301849481 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed AUG. 17, 2012 - Daytime high tide, a high high that is now growing daily, was at 13:23, i.e., 1:23 p.m. The amplitude was 12.0 metres. Today I arrived first at about 45 min. before the predicted high tide, at 13:35. There was almost no beach, and what little beach there was was occupied by two humans -- too bad for the sandpipers. But I was just in time to witness a big flock of circa 10,000 peeps/ sandpipers etc. appear in flight to the right from around the coastal bend, and they might have been flushed by a peregrine falcon, which I saw just a bit after the flock appeared (I didn't note any chases, but later I think I briefly saw a merlin, too, flying with lots of peeps). Eventually those recreators left the beach and I spoke to them briefly -- they were friendly and glad to find out about the needs of the birds and thanked me, too -- and some of the peeps landed on the rocks where the people now were absent. About 20 minutes later, just before 2 p.m., another flying flock of perhaps 2500 peeps appeared from the west, wheeled around a bit for our amusement, and then continued flying to the east. Also a fellow from Dartmouth was enjoying the show with me, and he said yesterday at East Point, alias The Guzzle, a team from Environment Canada (Can. Wildl. Service?) was trying to catch and tag peeps. And I heard from someone else that the banders/taggers are also using radio transmitters on the birds, so that their movements can be followed via airplane surveys. Good use for our public dollars! Here are the daytime high tide times and amplitudes from Aug. 13 through Aug. 28 (remember the second high tide of the day or night would be 12 hrs. & 25 min. after or before the posted times) -- note the changing amplitudes, which matter a lot for best times for observations: These times and heights are from the Blomidon Naturalists Society Calendar for 2012, and the August Photo by Roy Bishop shows roughly 500 semipalmated sandpipers packed together in a roost as tightly as I can imagine they can get! Aug. 13 - 10:13 a.m. - 8.2 metres; Aug. 14 - 11:05 - 8,9 m.; Aug. 15 - 11:53 - 9.9 m.; Aug. 16 - 12:39 p.m. - 11.0 m.; Aug. 17 - 13:23 - 12.0 m.; Aug. 18 - 14:07 - 13.0 m.; Aug. 19 - 14:50 - 13.7 m.; Aug. 20 - 15:35 - 14.0 m.; Aug. 21 - 16:21 - 14.0 m.; Aug. 22 - 17:10 - 13.6 m.; Aug. 23 - 18:03 - 12.9 m.; (Moon at Perigee Aug. 23, but no coincidence with New or Full Moon this month, which can produce big tidal amplitudes.) Aug. 24 - 06:32 a.m. - 12.0 m.; Aug. 25 - 07:33 - 11.2 m.; Aug. 26 - 08:36 - 10.7 m.; Aug. 27 - 09:42 - 10.8 m.; Aug. 28 - 10:44 - 11.2 m. ------------------------ Cheers from Jim in Wolfville --Apple-Mail-4--301849481 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/html; charset=US-ASCII
<body style=3D"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; = -webkit-line-break: after-white-space; "><div style=3D"margin-top: 0px; = margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; "><font = face=3D"Helvetica" size=3D"3" style=3D"font: 12.0px Helvetica">AUG. = 17, 2012 - Daytime high tide, a high high that is now = growing daily, was at 13:23, i.e., 1:23 p.m. The = amplitude was 12.0 metres.
<div = style=3D"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; = margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; = min-height: 14px; ">

<div style=3D"margin-top: 0px; = margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; "><font = face=3D"Helvetica" size=3D"3" style=3D"font: 12.0px Helvetica">Today I = arrived first at about 45 min. before the predicted high tide, at = 13:35.
