hi folks,
A few recent observations around Kings County:

Thursday, 17 August
------------------------------
- 12:45 pm: Adult *Northern Mockingbird *on telephone wires at roadside in
front of Kingstec main building (Belcher Street, *Kentville*; likely same
individual/s reported in July). This was a drive-by and I did not have a
chance to look for young
- 12:00 pm *Mourning Dove* *nest building* by *Port Williams* skating pond
(north side of Belcher Street, west of road to sewage ponds). BNA online
suggests breeding can occur late into August but is not explicit about
dates in our region.
- ~10:30 am: Kentville Research Station Ravine (32 Main st): several *Eastern
Wood Pewee*, fledgling *Bald Eagle*, 8 *Ruby-throated Hummingbirds*,
*Sharp-shinned
Hawk.*

Thursday, 17 Aug and Friday, 18 Aug
------------------------------------------------------
- a/the pair of *Great Crested Flycatchers* is still hanging around our
neighbourhood (28 Forest Hill Rd, *Kentville*). Early in the season, Devin
Johnstone originally reported these as nest building in a box in his
backyard (Chester Ave; failed attempt). We have both observed them
periodically in the neighbourhood over the past couple of months. They are
easy to detect by walking the streets here as they are frequently
vocalizing (beware Starling song "recycling"/mimicry). Last night, the pair
was vocalizing next door to me, and this morning the pair was foraging and
vocalizing in the canopy in our back yard for a few minutes around 7 am. No
sign of young to date.
cheers,
James.
