Texture was a bit = soft, taste fine but gathering them involved much mucky work. The astute = way to gather them, so I now understand, is to raid Muskrat stores.=20 Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Paul MacDonald=20 To: Nature NS=20 Sent: Thursday, August 16, 2012 4:02 PM Subject: [NatureNS] Arrowheads Hi All This afternoon I went to a small lake to try out a fly that I had conjured up. I left for home when it started to rain! I hadn't been to this lake in the last few weeks and since my last visit someone had hauled out a ramp that had been there for = years. It went over the peaty ground between the real shore and the water. The ramp was as a guess 3 meters long by 1 meter wide and of course had killed the vegetation below it. So now there is a peaty patch you wouldn't want to step in. Anyway Arrowheads have colonized the open area and are in full bloom. Quite attractive but late I think for flowers. They are the Broad leafed species ( Sagittaria latifolia ). Someone once told me they produce tubers which overwinter and grow next year. I was also told Native peoples used them as a source of = food and dug the tubers and cooked them. Has anyone ever eaten them? The fly produced a few White Perch quite nice ones 25 - 30 cms. Mary once had discussed White Perch becoming a species at risk but I = never heard anything more - These seem to thrive in lakes with Small Mouth = Bass but are unpredictable when they can be caught - for me at least. Others may know how to do it on a regular basis. Have a nice evening Paul No virus found in this message.
