There was an odour of dying fish although I did not = see any carcasses.=20 Of note were about 150 Greater Scaup which are starting to return from = breeding grounds elsewhere, 23 Hooded Mergansers, a fem. Ring-necked = Duck with 6 very small young, a Wilson's Snipe that flew in to open and = landed on the rocks at the spillway and a Sora that walked into the open = along a small cattail marsh on the lane into an unoccupied subdivision ( = Harbour View I think).=20 A WT Deer with 2 fawns was noted. I was not expecting to see butterflies = as it was to rain, but there was an American Lady, several Co. Wood = Nymphs, 3-4 Cabbage Whites and a small orange crescent like job that = eluded me since I was not carrying my net. I took photos of the Lady as = I was not sure if I had it for that square or not.=20 For those who are interested my ebird submission follows: cheers Ken Middle River of Pictou Dyke, Pictou, CA-NS 12-Aug-2012 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM Protocol: Traveling 4.0 kilometer(s) Comments: very humid, and very low water in reservoir 45 species (+1 other taxa) Wood Duck 2 American Wigeon 10 American Black Duck 30 Mallard 5 Greater Scaup 150 not rare here - common post breeding site Hooded Merganser 23 Double-crested Cormorant 80 Great Blue Heron 5 Osprey 3 Bald Eagle 2 Sora 1 Black-bellied Plover 1 Killdeer 5 Spotted Sandpiper 4 Greater Yellowlegs 1 Lesser Yellowlegs 1 Least Sandpiper 6 peep sp. 12 Wilson's Snipe 1 flew and landed in the open on the rocks by the = spillway Bonaparte's Gull 22 Ring-billed Gull 85 Herring Gull 16 Common Tern 8 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1 Belted Kingfisher 4 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 1 Northern Flicker 6 Blue-headed Vireo 1 Red-eyed Vireo 7 American Crow 11 Black-capped Chickadee 9 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 American Robin 12 European Starling 2 Cedar Waxwing 2 Ovenbird 1 Common Yellowthroat 4 American Redstart 4 Magnolia Warbler 1 Blackburnian Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 2 Song Sparrow 8 White-throated Sparrow 1 Bobolink 1 Red-winged Blackbird 6 American Goldfinch 12 This report was generated automatically by eBird v3 = (http://ebird.org/canada ------=_NextPart_000_01E4_01CD796E.01619BF0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META content=3D"text/html; charset=3Diso-8859-1" = http-equiv=3DContent-Type> <META name=3DGENERATOR content=3D"MSHTML 8.00.6001.19258"> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=3D#ffffff> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial>Ken McKenna<BR>Box 218 Stellarton = NS<BR>B0K=20 1S0<BR>902 752-7644<BR></FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial>Hi all</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial>John's message on travelling birders = reminded me=20 that I was going to post my birding observations on some hiking in the = Granton=20 area of Pictou Co yesterday morning (Aug 12) -mostly along the dyke = leading=20 to the spillway of the Middle River of Pictou. </FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial>Nothing rare seen, but the water levels = were quite=20 low and I doubt that the really heavy down pour we got yesterday = afternoon would=20 do much to affect the levels.
