--_000_D828AF18F9CABA4AADDA9D0F9808ED76BE55FBAB13bsc2008bsceoc_ Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Hi all, The Driftwood Wildlife Association, based in Texas, (www.chimneyswifts.org<= http://www.chimneyswifts.org>) organizes two continent-wide Swift counts ea= ch year; one in August and the next in September. Participants pick one ni= ght over the weekend to count either Vaux's or Chimney Swifts at a local ro= ost site, and then report their numbers and observations, much like Maritim= es SwiftWatch counts. This year, the first "Swift Night Out" count will occur between August 10-1= 2 (tonight until Sunday night). While Maritimes SwiftWatch migration counts= have just finished, I'd like to encourage anyone near a Chimney Swift roos= t to try one more count for this year (the next Swift Night Out will not oc= cur until September, when our swifts are all but gone from the Maritimes). These, and all other reports submitted by Maritimes SwiftWatch volunteers t= hroughout this year, will be shared with the Driftwood Wildlife Association= and other Chimney Swift researchers across North America, to help form a b= etter picture of Chimney Swift migration timing and routes. Further details are pasted below, and reports can be sent to Maritimes Swif= tWatch (marswifts@birdscanada.org<mailto:marswifts@birdscanada.org>) or dir= ectly to the Driftwood Wildlife Association. The current 2012 map can be vi= ewed here: http://www.chimneyswifts.org/page216.html A SWIFT NIGHT OUT (http://www.chimneyswifts.org/page7.html) A SWIFT NIGHT OUT is a continent-wide effort to raise awareness about and e= ncourage interest in Chimney Swifts and Vaux's Swifts. The project was ori= ginally inspired by John Connors with the North Carolina Museum of Natural = Sciences in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 2001 Paul and Georgean Kyle took J= ohn's suggestion and developed the program for the Driftwood Wildlife Assoc= iation that has become a favorite late summer event for professional and am= ateur birdwatchers alike. As summer draws to a close and the swifts have finished raising their young= , these fascinating aerial acrobats begin to congregate in communal roosts = prior to their migration in the fall. Some roosts may consist of an exten= ded family group of a half a dozen birds or so, but the larger sites can ho= st hundreds or even thousands of swifts! We encourage you to involve your = local Audubon chapters, bird clubs, scout groups and neighbors in this exhi= larating spectacle. Here is how it works: Keep your eyes to the skies at dusk in late July and= watch for areas where swifts are feeding. Look for a tall shaft, chimney= or similar structure to locate where Chimney Swifts (central to east coast= ) or Vaux's Swift (Pacific coast) go to roost in your area. This year, on one night over the weekend of August 10, 11, 12 and / or Sep= tember 7, 8, 9 observe the roost starting about 30 minutes before sunset an= d estimate the number of swifts that enter. When you have your number, Whe= n you have your number, email us. That's all there is to it! We ask that you include the following information: * Number of swifts counted * Time * Date * Location * Broad description of the site, e.g. school, warehouse, residence, Chimney= Swift Tower, etc. * Weather conditions may also be reported. Note: Please submit your reports in MSWord, Excel or as text in the body o= f an email only. Reports in PDF will not be accepted.
