It sounds like the rough = handling of the fish was due to inexperience, not intentional = malfeasance. Were you able to contact the leadership behind the project? = N.S. Fisheries and Aquaculture staff? Dusan Soudek ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Paul MacDonald=20 To: Nature NS=20 Sent: Thursday, August 09, 2012 2:14 PM Subject: [NatureNS] Cornwallis River Study Hi All Last night I went to the Cornwallis River to volunteer with the lads doing the fish study there. I was shocked with what I saw. The water is warm, 20 C as a guess, the lads were fishing with worms and big hooks with big barbs on them. Good if you were going to fry = the fish. They were extremely rough with the fish. They caught 8 brook trout between 16 - 24 cms so they were small. They put them in a pail with = maybe 12 in of water. When I looked one had already died and I wouldn't be = selling insurance to any of the rest. They were quite a piece from where they = done the tagging - they had to carry them and the temp was mid 20s. To my knowledge the study is a joint thing with Acadia University and the Department of Fisheries. Hard to believe these folks would do = thing like that but seeing is believing. If studies like this are going to be done, the operators need be shown proper methods. The lads are good lads but just weren't taught proper = respect for the fish. Not that there isn't plenty experts on handling fish in = Nova Scotia. There is not good tagging fish that will die. They told me they had tagged 250 fish and only had 3 recaptures - that = with fishing the same part of the river nearly every day. One fellow said = Now I know the reason why. Hope they will improve the situation.
