Hi Blake,

The Birds of North America account indicates that a second brood is rare.

All the best,

Lance

Hi All;

As the forest surrounding our subdivision has become more deciduous (thanks to the after-effects of Hurricane Juan) the habitat has become less interesting for Red-breasted Nuthatches, and this past spring, for the first time since we moved here in 1987, we had none breeding in our yard.

But as of a week ago we have been entertained by a family group of five, with the three youngsters doing an entertaining song and dance number to entice the adults to feed them bits of suet or peanuts. I am guessing this represents a late (or a second) nesting. Does anyone know if nuthatches have more than one nesting a season? Chickadees do, so why not nuthatches.

Regardless, I am pleased to have them back.

Cheers,

Blake
