The birding was = somewhat slow, but with a bit of searching I came up with 66 species. I = had 11 species of shorebird and 10 warbler species. Most interesting was = a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher flitting with warblers near the old small beaver = dam just west of Mason Rd. Up to that point, ~ 11:30, is was hard to = find many land birds. Never fails that you get a nice calm day, there = were few birds to be heard.I think birds became active just before the = afternoon showers. I sat out 1/2 hour of rain around noon eating lunch = at the wharf and looking at the birds on the west sandspit. As always = the mosquitoes were brutal! I don't remember that I have had a Gnatcatcher on Big I. before, but I = could be wrong on that.=20 There were quite a few loons around the island. There were some teens, = likely from one of the summer camps with canoes and tents on the beach. = Someone in the party was doing a respectable imitation of a loon and a = number of the loons seemed to be answering back.=20 Here is my e-bird submission.=20 cheers ken PS I missed the turnoff from the TCH 104 once again!! Still can't seem = to remember the new exit.=20 Big Island, Pictou, CA-NS 7-Aug-2012 8:15 AM - 1:15 PM Protocol: Traveling 15.0 kilometer(s) 66 species American Black Duck 58 Common Eider 11 Surf Scoter 16 Common Merganser 7 Common Loon 39 Northern Gannet 6 Double-crested Cormorant 21 Great Blue Heron 26 Bald Eagle 2 Northern Harrier 1 American Kestrel 3 Merlin 1 Black-bellied Plover 4 Semipalmated Plover 86 Spotted Sandpiper 1 Greater Yellowlegs 3 Willet 10 Lesser Yellowlegs 58 Ruddy Turnstone 10 Semipalmated Sandpiper 14 Least Sandpiper 57 White-rumped Sandpiper 6 Short-billed Dowitcher 55 Bonaparte's Gull 50 Ring-billed Gull 53 Herring Gull 21 Great Black-backed Gull 5 Common Tern 12 Rock Pigeon 1 Mourning Dove 2 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1 Belted Kingfisher 2 Downy Woodpecker 1 Hairy Woodpecker 1 Northern Flicker 5 Alder Flycatcher 6 Red-eyed Vireo 3 Blue Jay 3 American Crow 30 Common Raven 1 Barn Swallow 2 Black-capped Chickadee 5 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 1 flitting with warblers near old beaver dam = area near west end of island American Robin 21 Cedar Waxwing 10 Ovenbird 1 Black-and-white Warbler 4 Common Yellowthroat 6 American Redstart 2 Northern Parula 1 Magnolia Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 6 Chestnut-sided Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler 12 Black-throated Green Warbler 1 Savannah Sparrow 5 Nelson's Sparrow 2 Song Sparrow 16 Swamp Sparrow 3 White-throated Sparrow 7 Dark-eyed Junco 2 Bobolink 5 Purple Finch 6 White-winged Crossbill 1 Pine Siskin 1 American Goldfinch 12 This report was generated automatically by eBird v3 = (http://ebird.org/canada ------=_NextPart_000_007D_01CD74E3.3F8D8590 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META content=3D"text/html; charset=3Diso-8859-1" = http-equiv=3DContent-Type> <META name=3DGENERATOR content=3D"MSHTML 8.00.6001.19258"> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=3D#ffffff> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial>Ken McKenna<BR>Box 218 Stellarton = NS<BR>B0K=20 1S0<BR>902 752-7644<BR></FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial>Hi all</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial>I spent about 5 hours birding Big I., = Pictou=20 Co. today.
