Hughie and I did our swift watch last night = in Oxford, at the old free-standing chimney. We waited and waited and were = beginning to think the swifts had abandoned this chimney when one appeared = out of nowhere and dropped down the chimney without a sound, at 8:59. After= that, 6 more straggled in. Most were silent entries but 2 circled a few ti= mes, chittering to each other. The last bird entered very quietly at 9:26 w= hen it was almost too dark to see. Conditions were perfect for our count: 20C, no wind, no cloud cover. Also s= een were 2 Common Nighthawks foraging overhead, as well as a couple of bats= (likely Little Brown Bats?) foraging around the yard. There were more than= enough mosquitoes to go around.
